The Best Picture winner of 1979, the film that defeated "Apocalypse Now" and "All That Jazz" for the Oscar, has largely been diminished since that time, undoubtedly because the domestic dilemma at its core is no longer quite as timely or as pertinent. All the same, the Robert Benton adaptation of Avery Corman's novel remains a powerful dramatic tale, essentially a television movie elevated to the level of a powerful, studio motion picture thanks to heart-rending performances from Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep.
Columbia's transfer of the film is very good, though it is hampered somewhat by the film's own technical merits and the fact that it's probably not a high-profile title for sales. It's not shoddy looking by any means, though, and the fine Nestor Almendros photography comes through looking rather stellar in most places.
Bonus material on the DVD is mostly limited to the 50-minute documentary on the film's making. This new documentary features up-to-date interviews with Hoffman, Streep, Benton, producer Stanley Jaffe and even the grown-up Justin Henry. The fact that Henry remembers so much about the film is impressive, but also points to what a seminal moment it must have been emotionally for all of them. Hoffman discusses the film's relevance to his own life and his own troubling divorce while Benton and Jaffe confirm themselves members of a dying breed -- filmmakers who cared about story more than box office. Their passion for the material, as firm now as it was then, is inspiring. Watching this documentary before watching the movie again, in fact, may be a good way to help restore one's sense of just what a brilliant film it really was at the time.
