Table Manners in China and Western Countries
As the basis of all other ceremonies, table manners are the essential procedure in everyone’s daily life. To anyone’s education, we usually start from table manners. Then Table manners are very important since it is repeated many times every day. It must be done properly whether eating alone, with family, or with friends. You should train yourself in proper table manners, whether alone or with your family. It will then become a natural part of your behavior, and you will be at ease at the table.
Table manners in every kind of culture are totally different. For example, Chinese use chopsticks, western people use knives and forks, while Indian use hands what evidently reflect the difference between different cultures. Meanwhile, these differences can actively express the connotation and characteristic of different culture.
A.Chinese table manners
Chinese table manners of families have no intrinsic quality even there are different region and position. No matter three meals a day or guest’s arrival, always bowls with chopsticks, food with soup. There is no rule for how to put the tableware. What people care about more are not the gorgeous tableware but the sumptuous food. People’s dining position reflects the most obvious etiquette of Chinese table manners. In ancient society, men are supreme, and women are not allowed to sit with men on the same table. Although this is modern society, this kind of ancient etiquette still remains. Today in China, the phenomenon that men sit on the table before women can be found everywhere. The master of a family usually sits on the first-class seat. The first-class seat is usually near the interior of a room facing to the door. Once there is a guest, the master will offer the first-class seat to the guest politely. If it is an ordinary meal of family, families should start after the elder. If there is a guest, the master offer the food to the guest is essential from the beginning to the end. And the tradition of urging others to drink is also a special phenomenon.
Even there is no official “table manners’ in china, while there is “eating behavior”. Once there is “eating behavior”, there must be some eating manners up to standard.
Here are some characteristics on Chinese eating:
a. Keep your eyes on the meal, especially at the beginning of the meal.
b. When eating, keep your bodies forward, and face to your food.
c. It is allowed to spit the bone on the tables.
d. When chewing, it is allowed to make some rhythmical noisy of chewing.
e. Traditional Chinese meal doesn’t need the public chopsticks.
f. Traditional Chinese meal doesn’t have the sweet snacks after meal.

The biggest difference in table manners between Chinese and western is the details of table manners can be as clear as the specifications what can exactly give people correct manners to refer to.
Here are several typical manners what can illustrate the rigor of Western-style food.

english movies and chinese culture
from 1980s, a lot of western things have been swarming into china, which have influenced chinese culture greatly. just as everything has two sides. i think these influences include positive and negative aspects.
positive aspects:
political culture----the concept of democracy
in english movies, there are lots of scenes such as election, parliament and ballot. chinese know the western democracy truly that is different from the education of the chinese communist party.
life culture----real western life style
in english movies, we find that life can be so degage like that. it makes many people thirsty for english life even paying with their lives.
family culture----the new family concept
in the chinese culture, there are usually big families. lots of people live together including your grandparents, your parents, your aunts, your uncles, your brothers, your sisters and you. however, when we have seen english movies, we changed our concept. we know that parents and we can live separately. parents will not put so much attention on us as before after we could support ourselves. they can live happily by themselves, but in past, parents put their attention on us all their lives. meanwhile, we also find that we will not take care of our parents so much when we come up the stage. in past, the situation is not so. chinese attach importance to filial piety so that we should take care of our parents very much.
clothing culture----various clothing
in english movies, we find that we can live by ourselves which is called individualism. in the past, chinese clothing is simple that is different from motley clothing and hairstyle in england. recently, from sun yet sen's uniform to business suit, from cheongsam to erogenous clothes,the clothing has changed greatly.
food culture----food and drink
in english movies, we can frequently see a family having breakfast together in the morning. milk and coffee become more and more popular among youths in china. meanwhile, tea that represents traditional drink in chinese culture has less influence than before. moreover, fast foods such as hamburgers, sandwiches, chips and buffet dinners impact chinese food. a lot of chinese, especially youths consider them as their favourite food, though they are a litter expensive.
negative aspects:
sexual culture----eroticism
as everyone known, there are lot of sexual scenes such as bareness and sex in hollywood movies. praiseworthily, they bring liberation of sex in china. however, it leads many problems such as porno, coprology, carnalism and one-night love.
violent culture----adoring violence
typical violent movies such as 007 greatly influence chinese. a lot of people like to use violence to settle problems.
